Danforth Jr. High Newsletter

Principal’s Message

This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. Get high on Life, not on Drugs.

Drugs: You use, you lose.

Just Say NO.

In my mind I clearly see a frying pan, an egg and a stove when I hear that first slogan above. Maybe you do too. Or maybe it’s one of the other slogans that takeyou to a place that reminds you of an ad campaign created by adults to (hopefully) steer kids away fromdrugs. Those Anti-Drug slogans and others have been around a long time. How effective those efforts and others were in curtailing actual drug use might be debatable. What is not up for debate is how adults in a young person’s life (as well as their peer group) directly impacta child’s attitudes and choices about illegal drugs.

So we’re coming up on what schools refer to as their “red ribbon week”. Danforth Jr. High won’t be passing out ribbons but many of our students will “dress up” for fun during the final week of October. And we hope those “dress up days” will help put the spotlight on the importance of making good choices when it comes to illegal substances. So next Monday (the 26th) we’ll have some fun with clothes and some goofy drug slogans. Maybe most our students will choose to participate and they’ll have a blast. Maybe some won’t. I’m not sure.

What I am sure about is that those of us in the building (and each of you reading this) want your children to make healthy choices about illegal substances. It’s an influence that starts at home and is influenced greatly by the friends our teenagers surround themselves with during the next several years.
