Principal’s Message
One week ago……..
We had a spectacular turnout for Open House. In fact the response was so good that it took a lot of patience for you to wait in the heat in a sometimes very long line. Thank you for following our protocols and for taking the time to be here. I hope you left feeling good about our campus and your child’s teachers.
Five days ago…….
Classes began and it was a very special and unique day for everyone. I was so proud of our teachers and how they jumped into this new reality and made their classrooms come alive. It was fun for me to see our staff display the same warmth and compassion they’ve always had with their students (even on a computer screen). And I was also really proud of our students. We have 621 enrolled at Danforth and nearly every single one of those students was either present with their teacher during the class time or they checked in later in the day on Wednesday (the Asynchronous students). And finally, thank you parents/grandparents/guardians. Yes we are proud of how it started but it’s going to take all of us to make this thing work throughout the entire school year.
Four days ago……
Our 7th and 8th graders began cross country, volleyball and football workouts. As a matter of fact volleyball will host their first game of the season this Thursday. There are some strict protocols for spectators that the UIL (the governing body of school sports) and our school has in place. Students will not be allowed to attend unless they have a sibling playing and they sit with their parent. No one will be allowed to walk up and attend the contest. All tickets must be purchased prior to the game through our athletic department. Coach Carter has all the details on how this will work so if you have questions send her an email at stephanie.carter@wimberleyisd.net
Today……..
We start our first full week of school. As I mentioned above we feel like we had an amazing start but…….this week may reveal some areas where we need to do a better job with technology or connecting with you and your child. Please contact your child’s teacher to let them know where we can help.
Moving forward DAILY……
You can already tell this is a big leap forward from what school looked like when it was derailed back in March. The paper packets are gone and so is the “relaxed” attitude we had about student engagement. Last spring’s model was to push out assignments every two weeks and have a few check-ins with students. This new model is about DAILY interaction with each of your child’s teachers. They have six classes on their schedule so that’s going to be a chore. But DAILY participation and DAILY presence (either virtually or in person) will help us get to the point we are seeing DAILY academic growth for your child. And finally, the academic catching up we need to do from last spring will require this DAILY participation. Are you sensing a theme here?
Thank you……….
……..for helping us start strong and for helping us this week to maintain that momentum. If you have questions please email me at greg.howard@wimberleyisd.net for give us a call at 512-847-2181.
Greg Howard, Principal
