Danforth Jr. High Newsletter

Principal’s Message
Thank you for taking a look at our Jr. High Newsletter.
I usually have a couple of thoughts I share in this top section and then you’ll find more detailed info about upcoming events in the section below my name.
So……we’re three days in and it feels like we’ve started well. For parents and guardians, I hope the chaos of the traffic on that first day is gone and our bus schedule is making sense to everyone. For students it seems like they’ve figured out the lockers, passing periods, lunch schedules, and a bit of a “normal” routine. The physical part of our building will continue to be in various stages of construction throughout this school year. Most of that work will be out next to Carney Lane in what used to be our bus lane. That area will eventually be new classrooms. Until that is complete in July of 2020, there will be fencing that keeps our students safely away from those areas. We will continue to remind our students to not walk on Carney Lane on the construction side since there is no room for pedestrians.
Our first dance is Friday evening. 6th graders will enjoy the dance from 5-6:30 and we ask that all our 6th graders are picked up promptly at 6:30. That will allow for the drop-off of our 7th & 8th graders by 7. Our goal is to have all 7th and 8th graders picked up at 8:30 as their portion of the dance is completed. These are usually so much for the students and that fun is made possible by our wonderful PTO. Look below for more info from them about helping out.
Some of you reading this are new to our school and we welcome you. We also are excited to have our returning parents and guardians with us. As some of you already know, we put a big emphasis on having good communication between our staff and our parents and guardians. This weekly newsletter is part of the effort. Teachers will be in contact with you about the things that pertain to their classrooms. Our Coaches will be doing the same for Athletics. The bottom line is we want you to be part of this process. The best schools have teachers and parents who work side by side to make the school year the best possible. All schools say that but I feel like our staff does an excellent job of working with parents throughout the entire year. It won’t be perfect and some mistakes will be made. If we fall short in some area please contact us directly and let us know how we can come up with a better way forward. Sometimes it seems like the whole world just wants to air everything on social media first before even trying to find a solution. That has not been our experience at Danforth. It is our hope that when a problem arises, for the sake of these wonderful students, we’ll work together to solve it. We can leave the social media stuff to the Kardashians of the world.
Thanks for reading all this. If I haven’t met you already, say hi in the drop-off or pick-up line or maybe at the Open House on August 29th. Have a good week.
Greg Howard, Principal

More detailed info about other Danforth activities
From Maggie Price – PTO President The first school dance is coming up this Friday, August 23rd. Students should wear Neon or White so you can Light Up the Dance Floor! The 6th grade dance is from 5:00 pm to 6:30 and the 7th and 8th grade is from 7:00 to 8:30. Tickets are $6.00 and will be sold at lunch Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before the dance. You can also purchase tickets at the door. The dances are great fun for the kids and big fundraisers for the PTO. All the proceeds go the school to support your students and teachers. Please see the sign up link below to volunteer as a chaperone or donate concessions and door prizes. Any questions, please text Maggie Price at 512-221-3596. From Calen Cabler – High School Theatre Director
Children’s Show auditions will be Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20th and 21st, in the JGW/LWM Lone Star Theatre at the High School. Auditions will begin at 6:30 pm sharp. Nothing needs to be prepared, just be ready to read from the script. We hope to see you there!
From Lee Ann Young – Wimberley 4-H Club
The 4-H Club is a club for kids 3rd – 12th grade. There are activities from food science, to STEM, fashion design and photography, there’s a program for everyone! 4-H is about much more than just raising livestock. As a matter of fact, there is no requirement to have livestock to be in 4-H. We meet the 2nd Monday of the month at Wimberley VFW at 7 pm. We’d love to talk to you about 4-H and see if it’s the right fit for you.
