Wimberley HS Boys Win Team State Championship in Track & Field
May 13, 2022
The Wimberley HS boys' team won the school's first-ever team State Championship in Track & Field on May 12 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. The boys' team was led by top finishes in two relays and also scored points in three individual events to finish 25 points ahead of second-place Argyle HS.
Capping the day of competition was the mile relay foursome of Canyun Staton, Nathan Brooks, Landon Gary, and Juan Olmedo-Barraco. Already the WHS record-holders in the event, the team further lowered their school mark in running 3:17.50 to win the gold medal by more than two seconds. The same group also won the 4x400 Division I title at the Texas Relays earlier this spring.
The same four Texans also lowered their own school record in the 4x200 meter relay at the state meet. Their time of 1:26.79 was .28 behind first place Decatur HS. The silver medal added 16 points to the overall team score. In individual events, Canyun Staton earned a silver medal in the 200 meter dash, running a time of 21.42 (just .01 from his own school record). Moses Wray received a bronze medal for his best shot put of 54'-9.5", and Gabe Wray received a bronze medal for his triple jump of 46'-6.25". All WHS boys that competed at the state meet earned at least one medal.
Three WHS girls also competed at the state meet. Emily Thames, a bronze medalist in long jump in 2021, was only .5" away from duplicating that feat this year, but had to settle for fourth place with a personal-best jump of 18'-4.5". Grace Harney ran in both hurdles races, finishing 8th in the 100 meter hurdles and 9th in the 300 meter hurdles. Elise Brown cleared two heights in the pole vault competition, with a best of 10'-6", to finish in 8th place.
