WISD Teachers Named VFW Post 6441 Citizenship Education Awardees

The Wimberley Oldham-Cummings Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6441 has announced the three honorees for its annual Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Wimberley High School Honors World Geography teacher Keisha Thiebaud was the high school winner, Danforth Junior High Honors U.S. History teacher Stephanie Carter was named at the junior high, and 3rd-grade Jacob's Well Elementary teacher Kerri Volk won at the elementary level. The VFW's teacher of the year program recognizes teachers who promote civic responsibility, citizenship, and American history and traditions. All three WISD honorees were nominated by their respective campus prinicpals.
In WHS principal Jason Valentine's letter nominating Thiebaud he wrote, "Mrs. Thiebaud is able to teach citizenship, civic responsibility, leadership and character development through all of her teaching assignments. She is always looking for the next chance to have a positive impact on her students or colleagues." Thiebaud also serves WHS as a basketball and track coach.
DJH principal Greg Howard wrote this about Carter: "When I drop by Stephanie Carter's room you can hear the passion she has for American history. She works hard each day to instill that same passion and respect for America in her students." Carter is also the DJH girls Athletic Coordinator and coaches volleyball, basketball, and track.
JWE Principal SueAnna Thomas nominated Volk, saying, "She does not shy away from presenting any topic to her students in a kid appropriate manner that is realistic and applicable to thier lives which allows students the opportunity to develop their own thoughts and ideas."
The three local winners were submitted by VFW Post 6441 to the District 5 competition, which includes VFW posts located in Wimberley, Buda, Canyon Lake, Dripping Springs, Kyle, Lockhart, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Schertz and others.
